Managing Analog Beams in mmWave Networks

چکیده
In this paper we consider multi-cell mmWave networks wherein each cell equipped with a large antenna array can employ an analog precoder (or a group of analog beams) to serve its associated users, while each such user can employ a single analog beam. A key problem over such a network is to determine the set of users that each cell should serve (a.k.a. user association), the group of beams it should employ, as well as their attributes such as how often and with how much power should each beam be used. This problem becomes harder since the choice of beam at any user is coupled to the cell it is assigned to and the latter’s choice of beams. Moreover, practical considerations demand that each transmitting and receiving beam and their attributes be selected from finite codebooks. We develop novel solutions to this seemingly intractable problem. We adopt the generalized Qualityof-Service (QoS) Proportional Fairness (PF) network utility which can balance efficiency with fairness, and is particularly relevant for coverage constrained mmWave systems, since QoS constraints demand provisioning a minimum rate for each user. We prove that, remarkably, the user association problem under this QoSPF utility can be formulated as a constrained submodular set function maximization problem. Consequently, it can be optimally solved (upto an additive constant) using distributed algorithms. We then propose a simple distributed algorithm to optimize the choice of beams and their attributes, and prove that it converges to a social equilibrium even in the presence of a non-ideal communication channel among cells.

mmWave Massive MIMO with Simple RF and Appropriate DSP
There is considerable interest in the combined use of millimeter-wave (mmwave) frequencies and arrays of massive numbers of antennas (massive MIMO) for next-generation wireless communications systems. A symbiotic relationship exists between these two factors: mmwave frequencies allow for densely packed antenna arrays, and hence massive MIMO can be achieved with a small form factor; low per-ante...

There is much interest in integrating millimeter wave radios (mmWave) into wireless LANs and 5G cellular networks to benefit from their multiple GHz of available spectrum. Yet unlike existing technologies, e.g., WiFi, mmWave radios require highly directional antennas. Since the antennas have pencil-beams, the transmitter and receiver need to align their antenna beams before they can communicate...

Multicast transmissions have been widely analyzed in traditional networks as a way to improve spectrum efficiency when multiple users are interested in the same data. However, their application to mmWave communications has been studied only marginally so far. The goal of this paper is to partially fill this gap by investigating optimal and suboptimal multicast schemes for mmWave communications ...
متن کاملOn Bounds of Spectral Efficiency of Optimally Beamformed NLOS Millimeter Wave Links
Beamforming is an indispensable feature for millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless communications in order to compensate for the severe path loss incurred due to high frequency operation. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework to evaluate the spectral efficiency (SE) of non-line-ofsight (NLOS) mmWave links with optimal analog beamforming. Optimality here implies the joint selection of antenna...

This paper considers an uplink multiuser hybrid beamforming system where a base station (BS) communicates with multiple users simultaneously. The performance of the uplink multiuser hybrid beamforming system depends on the effective channel which is given by the product of channel matrix and the analog beams. Therefore, to maximize the performance, we need to acquire information of the channels...
